John Rawlings Rees Tavistock
John Rawlings Rees, also known as "Jack" or "J.R.", was a British psychiatrist who played a significant role in the development of the Tavistock Clinic and the Tavistock Institute. He became the medical director of the Tavistock Clinic in 1933 and began planning to establish an Institute of Medical Psychology, although these plans were halted by the outbreak of World War II.78
During the war, Rees was appointed as a consulting psychiatrist to the British Army and obtained the rank of brigadier. He oversaw experiments with group psychotherapy, therapeutic communities, morale, rehabilitation, and selection tests. He was also responsible for the care of Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy, after his capture.78
After the war, Rees was involved in founding the Tavistock Institute with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation. He left the Tavistock Clinic in 1947 and became the chief organizer of the 1948 International Congress for Mental Health in London, where the World Federation for Mental Health was founded. Rees was elected as the first president of the World Federation for Mental Health.78
Rees was known for his innovative work in psychiatry and his contributions to the field of mental health. He worked tirelessly for better recognition and provisions for mental health through the United Nations agencies and national departments of public health
